Mission Statement

The mission of Animal Outreach of Shelby County is to help reduce the killing at the Shelbyville Shelby County Animal Shelter by encouraging responsible pet ownership, promoting spay/neuter programs, and implementing trap/neuter/return (TNR) as a humane solution to the growing stray and feral cat population.

How do we do this?

Responsible pet ownership:

  • Prevent relinquishment through access to behavior hotlines, behavior tip sheets, and pet parenting classes;
  • Increase percentage of pets with permanent I.D. through affordable microchipping; and
  • Facilitate low cost wellness clinics for basic vet care;

Promoting spay/neuter programs:

  • Provide spay/neuter services affordable to everyone;
  • Increase access to pediatric spay/neuter, reaching pets before they are sexually mature; and
  • Engage in aggressive, targeted marketing to reach our intended target populations.

Implement trap/neuter/return (TNR) as a humane solution to the growing stray and feral cat population:

  • providing information and education to the community about humane colony management;
  • loaning traps to colony caretakers;
  • developing a food bank for registered colonies; and
  • facilitating low-cost and free sterilization and vaccination of feral cats.
