About

Established in December 2007, Animal Outreach of Shelby County is an all volunteer nonprofit TNR service for all of Shelby County!

Animal Outreach of Shelby County addresses the overpopulation of free-roaming, unowned cats through two basic programs:

  • The nonlethal management of feral colonies and
  • The placement of adoptable cats and kittens into good homes.

Animal Outreach of Shelby County supports the nonlethal management of feral cat colonies by using the method of trap, spay/neuter, and return (TNR). Volunteer caretakers manage feral colonies by providing food and shelter and implementing the TNR method to prevent the number of cats from growing in the colony.

Since many feral cats are cast off by families or lost, some cats in a feral colony may be tame and friendly. In addition, kittens that are humanely trapped between the ages of four and twelve weeks can be tamed. Animal Outreach of Shelby County volunteers provide foster homes for these cats and kittens until they are ready to be placed in good homes.

Before a cat or kitten is considered adoptable, each one spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Animal Outreach of Shelby County charges an adoption fee to help offset the medical costs. We have a Petfinder site where we post these cats for adoption. We also have cage space at the Greenwood PetSmart. We do not have a shelter, only a network of fosters.

Our main goal is to stabilize and eventually reduce the stray, feral, and free-roaming cat population with trap-neuter-return.
